Choosing a winning attitude

Is there anything about diabetes that is effortless? Not only are we trying to keep up our daily routine of work, home, studies (if you are a student), friendships, family, and other commitments, but then there is a disease that can cause unwanted long term complications if we aren’t careful. Eating healthy, checking glucose levels, exercising, and taking medications or insulin on time, (the “tools” for managing diabetes) on top of our normal activities can be overwhelming for people, and definitely takes effort!

When a person is diagnosed with diabetes, there can be many emotions that need to be recognized. The emotions depend a lot on the previous experience someone may have had with diabetes. For example, if “Lydia’s” Aunt Gertrude passed away because of terrible diabetes complications, she’ll probably have greater fear and anxiety than “Ted” who has no family members or friends that have had to deal with diabetes.
